Make Johnno's Tomato Sauce at Home

Smooth, tangy, and gently spiced, this classic tomato sauce is a pantry staple. From roasts to pies and chips, it’s thick, rich, and perfect for everyday meals. Using Johnno’s Make Your Own Sauce makes it easy to craft your own batch at home.

This recipe uses a full bottle of Johnno’s Make Your Own Sauce. Adjust quantities to make a smaller batch if preferred.

Yields: ~ 10 kg (20 x 500 g jars)

Ingredients:
  • 9 kg chopped tomato
  • 2 kg fine diced onion
  • 1 kg diced apple
  • 2 kg sugar
  • 1 bottle Johnno's Make Your Own Sauce
  • 20 g mustard powder
  • 20 g mild curry powder
  • 20 g ground ginger
  • 100 g salt

Method:
  1. Peel and coarsely chop tomatoes; combine with remaining ingredients in large heavy-base saucepan.

  2. Stir over heat, without boiling, until sugar dissolves. Simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, about 1¼ hours or until mixture thickens. In Small batches, blend the mixture in a food processor until smooth and thick.

  3. Spoon sauce into hot sterilised jars; seal while hot.
