Johnno's Tomato Chutney

Johnno's Tomato Chutney

There’s nothing like the taste of Tassie-grown tomatoes turned into a vibrant, tangy chutney. With a little help from Johnno’s Make Your Own Sauce, you can craft your own batch. This classic chutney is a delicious sidekick to a range of dishes — meats, cheeses, toasties, pies and stews all love a dollop. Add extra ground chilli to make this a chutney with attitude.

If your garden is bursting with tomatoes, this recipe makes a generous batch that’s ideal for stocking up your pantry — or for gifting to friends and family who love a little homemade goodness.

Yields: ~ 10 kg (20 x 500 g jars)
Ready in: 2 hours

Ingredients:
  • 9 kg chopped tomato
  • 2 kg fine diced onion
  • 2 kg diced apple
  • 2 kg sugar
  • 1 bottle Johnno's Make Your Own Sauce
  • 20 g mustard powder
  • 30 g mild curry powder
  • 15 g ground chilli
  • 150 g salt

Method:

1. Peel and coarsely chop tomatoes; combine with remaining ingredients in large heavy-base saucepan.

2. Stir over heat, without boiling, until sugar dissolves. Simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, about 1¼ hours or until mixture thickens.

3. Spoon hot Chutney into hot sterilised jars; seal while hot.
